Celebrity Judge And Host, Ralph Macchio, ‘Revved Up’ Awareness of Important Health Screenings

Stony Brook – On Sunday, July 31, 65 classic and exotic cars drove to Stony Brook University Cancer Center to partake in the first ever “Revved Up For a Cure Car Show.” Over 200 participants had the chance to meet “Karate Kid” actor Ralph Macchio, who was ‘in the driver’s seat’ as celebrity host and judge, and to take photos with the ’47 Ford Convertible Coupe from the hit movie.
Macchio helped raise awareness on the importance of health screenings, especially for men who spend a lot of time tuning up their vehicles but neglect to do the same with their own bodies. For a ‘Healthy Tune-Up’, Stony Brook medical staff was present and gave the following free screenings:
- Cholesterol Screening – 73 participants
- Blood Pressure – 50 participants
- Carotid Screening – 38 participants
- Prostate Screening Blood Test (PSA) – 28 participants
- Varicose Veins Screening – 9 participants
“Several of the screenings resulted in patients requiring follow-up care, which emphasizes the importance and the impact of health awareness,” said Angela A. Kokkosis, MD, Co-Medical Director of the Vascular Lab, Stony Brook Medicine.
The proceeds from this souped-up event will support men’s cancer programs and services at Stony Brook University Cancer Center.
