Continuing Aggressive Crackdown On Blighted Homes, Town Demolishes Another “Zombie” House
Mastic – The Town continued its aggressive crackdown on blighted properties with the recent demolition of 37 Seymour Avenue in Mastic.
This house, which sat vacant and in disrepair for years, had numerous violations of both Town and New York State Building and Fire Prevention Codes, which presented a public nuisance and a threat to the health, safety and welfare of nearby neighbors.
An engineer’s report found that the house was “unsafe” due to structural damage to the roof, ceiling joists, bearing walls, and exterior wall structure because of “neglect” and “lack of maintenance.” The report further states that the dwelling was “unfit for human occupancy.”
Supervisor Romaine said, “Nearly every community in Brookhaven Town has seen an increase in “zombie” houses and many are not secure. We have been very aggressive in our efforts to issue violations and will continue to demolish these dangerous eyesores throughout the Town.”
“We are raising the quality of life for all on a daily basis,” said Councilman Dan Panico “This demolition, the myriad that preceded it and the multitude that will follow, are all part of the most aggressive crackdown on suburban blight in the history of Brookhaven Town. We are raising the bar for what is to be expected in our Town to the delight of our residents.”
The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner.
