Late Goals Sink Seawolves In 3-1 Loss To Hofstra On Friday Night
Stony Brook – The atmosphere was electric at LaValle Stadium on Friday night as 2,136 fans showed up for the Stony Brook men’s soccer team’s (0-1-0) season opener vs. Hofstra (1-0-0), but the Pride’s Joseph Holland stole the show with two goals in the match’s final 15 minutes to lead Hofstra to a 3-1 victory.
Anatol’s Quote
“For 75 minutes I thought it was really good,” said head coach Ryan Anatol. We had a fantastic crow
d tonight and dictated the way we wanted to play. Tibby gave us a fantastic goal and we were in position to get a big result against a good team up until the free kick, but the kid is a special player and buried it, which changed the complexion of the game.”
Highlights
- Hofstra struck first in the 20th minute when Luke Brown headed home a rebound.
- Senior Lars Togstad (Trondheim, Norway) ignited the Stony Brook attack from his center back position, twice nearly equalizing. On the first opportunity, he took a pass from sophomore Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) and let rip a booming shot that was punched out for a corner.
- On the ensuing corner, Togstad got his head to the ball but rang it off the crossbar.
- Junior Thibault Duval (Liege, Belgium) leveled the match at 1-1 in the 26th minute, chesting down a failed clearance and ripping a volley inside the far post for his fourth career goal.
- Stony Brook had the better of the play early in the second half. Its best scoring attempt came on a dangerous cross from juniorBarnabas Mako (Budapest, Hungary), which was tackled over the goal for a corner.
- Holland broke the 1-1 deadlock in the 75th minute smashing a free kick from 30 yards out into the top corner.
- Holland, a preseason second team All-American, found himself on the scoresheet once again just 80 seconds later, taking a feed from Lerthon Thuema and slotting to the far post.
Notes
- Stony Brook dominated most of the play, finishing with a 14-5 advantage in shots.
- Togstad and freshman Jarred Dass (Marabella, Trinidad) led Stony Brook with four shots apiece.
