Supervisor Romaine Urges Fire Island Residents To Follow Suffolk County Advisory To Evacuate
Farmingville – Supervisor Ed Romaine announced on Saturday that he urges residents to follow Suffolk County’s call for a voluntary evacuation of Fire Island in anticipation of Tropical Storm Hermine.
The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for Nassau and Suffolk counties as the storm moves closer to Long Island. It is expected to cause flooding along Fire Island and coastal Long Island starting on Sunday morning and continuing through Tuesday. Heavy rains and gusty winds are also forecasted. The Town will open its Emergency Operations Center (OEC) on Sunday morning and will coordinate all storm related efforts during the storm with Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) and their Office of Emergency Management.
Supervisor Romaine said, “Tropical Storm Hermine is a dangerous weather event that has caused flooding and property damage in Florida and along the East Coast. I urge everyone to heed the warnings and keep an eye on conditions throughout the weekend. Fire Island is especially vulnerable, so my strong recommendation is to be on the safe side and follow the County’s voluntary evacuation directive.”
It is important for residents to be prepared for this weather event and everyone should take the following precautions:
– Secure and have available important documents
– Have a food and water supply for three to five days
– Make sure your cars are parked in your driveways to provide a clear path for emergency vehicles
– Secure and turn off propane tanks
– Charge cell phones, laptops and other electronic devices
– Secure outdoor furniture and other objects that could become projectiles
– Remove leaves and other debris from nearby storm drains
– Stay tuned to your local radio and television stations for news and weather updates
