Opponent
Sacred Heart is 3-0 this season with wins over Stetson, Valparaiso and Marist. The Pioneers, led by fourth-year head coach Mark Nofri, begin Northeast Conference player next week when they visit Wagner.
The Series
This will be the 15 meeting between the two former Northeast Conference rivals. The Seawolves own a 10-4 series lead, including a 6-3 record in games played at Stony Brook. The two schools have not met on the gridiron since the 2006 season, Stony Brook’s last in the NEC.
Captains
Stony Brook’s captains for the 2016 season are graduate WR Tim Keith, senior DB Jaheem Woods, senior DL Aaron Thompson, junior DB Tyrice Beverette and junior RB Stacey Bedell. Saturday’s honorary captain is two-time Seawolves’ captain Chimizie Okobi ’04.
Against the Ranks
Stony Brook is 6-18 all-time against FCS ranked opponents, including the Seawolves’ 13-9 season-opening victory against No. 19 North Dakota. Stony Brook has played the top ranked team once (at Sam Houston State in the second round of the playoffs in 2011) and the second-ranked team twice (at Montana in the second round of the playoffs in 2012 and Towson on Sept. 28, 2013). Richmond’s No. 2 ranking equals the highest ranked opponent to come into Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium (No. 2 Towson on Sept. 28, 2013).
Uplifting Athletes Touchdown Pledge Drive
In conjunction with Uplifting Athletes, the Seawolves are holding a Touchdown Pledge Drive during today’s game in support of research for Medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in children. With each touchdown scored today, money will go towards raising awareness and research funds in honor of Joe Feminella, the Seawolves 17-year-old co-captain who was diagnosed with the disease when he was 5. The Stony Brook football team and Joe have enjoyed a relationship since 2009. Visit www.pledgeit.org/stonybrook16 to contribute.
