Educators Invited To Explore The Shore At Fire Island National Seashore’s Fall Workshop And Open House

Patchogue – Educators of all disciplines are invited to free events at Fire Island National Seashore this fall. On Saturday, October 15 a Seashore Dynamics Educator’s Workshop will be held and on Tuesday, November 8 there will be an Educator’s Open House.

“Fire Island National Seashore is a valuable educational resource for place-based education,” said Fire Island National Seashore Chief of Interpretation and Education Kathy Krause “and it’s right in Long Island’s backyard.”

Park staff will be on hand this fall to offer the following opportunities for educators.

Seashore Dynamics Educator’s Workshop

Saturday, October 15

12:30 to 4:30 pm

Wilderness Visitor Center

The workshop is geared primarily for middle and high school science teachers, although all educators are welcome.

The workshop will provide science content, earth science curriculum connections, and field activities relating to the complex topic of coastal dynamics. The activities and lesson plans will cover beach profiling, wind and wave qualities, and mineral identification and sediment sorting.

Come learn about the Fire Island Treasure Chest and Project EduBat traveling trunks, CORE-aligned lesson plans, field trip planning, and the Every Kid in a Park program.

Launched last September, the Every Kid in a Park program offers fourth graders and their families free access to all federally managed lands and waters. The Seashore and its partner, the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society (FILPS), offer curriculum-aligned programming on maritime history and plant and animal adaptations for fourth grade students. FILPS will honor the Every Kid in a Park pass for a second year, offering fourth graders and one caregiver free tower tours.

National parks are America’s largest classrooms and offer a rich diversity of education materials for all grade levels. More than 400 national parks, including Fire Island National Seashore, provide teacher resources online at www.nps.gov/teachers including classroom materials like lesson plans and science labs, traveling trunks, and information on field trips, distance learning, and professional development.
