William Floyd High School Students Tour Engineering Facility For Manufacturing Day

Farmingdale – Approximately 50 William Floyd High School students enrolled in Michael Buffalino’s and Paul Vassallo’s first-year “Geometry in Construction” class recently participated in a field trip to Precipart, a global manufacturing company engaged in the engineering, design and manufacture of high-precision mechanical components, assemblies, gears and motion control systems in the medical technology, aerospace and industrial sectors. This field trip was part of Manufacturing Day, a celebration of modern manufacturing designed to inspire the next generation of engineers and manufacturers.

During the field trip, students got an up-close look at Precipart’s electromechanical procedures, including gear cutting, grinding, 3D printing, assembly, inspection and testing. The company also shared details on its ongoing collaboration with a humanitarian initiative, Project Daniel, which provides prosthetic limbs to amputees in the war-torn country of Sudan. The first patient in the program was Daniel, a Sudanese boy who lost both of his arms in an explosion at the age of 14. The company also manufactures for many clients who provide life-saving technology including one that uses an endoscopic camera for a 3D view of the heart.

“The students were amazed at the scale of Precipart’s projects and shocked by the size of the facilities,” said Mr. Vassallo. Mr. Buffalino added, “They were also impressed by the machines used to create each part and commented on the level of scrutiny, attention to detail and precision required to quality control each individual part.”

“Over the next decade, the industry will see an increasing need to fill millions of manufacturing jobs, many of which could go unfilled if the current outlook does not change,” said Precipart President/CEO John Walter. “We at Precipart are proud to share that we experience double digit growth each year and a high level of employee retention and promotion. In the past year, we hired 40 full- and part-time employees. Time and time again, our personnel express how rewarding it is to create tangible technology that serves a true purpose.”

Precipart representatives also addressed the growing demand, both near and far, for highly-skilled professional manufacturers who can design, program and operate the technology. Students also learned about job opportunities and careers available in the field.
