Stony Brook – The Stony Brook women’s basketball team (0-2) welcomes No. 14 Syracuse (2-0) to Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Friday night at 7 p.m.
Scouting Syracuse
Syracuse is riding its momentum after its magical run to the NCAA Tournament Championship game last season, where it fell to No. 1 UConn. The Orange are 2-0 to start the season, averaging 98.0 points per game. They are led by All-ACC first team performer Alexis Peterson. The senior point guard is averaging 23.5 ppg and 7.5 apg through the first two games. She has help from seniors Brittany Sykes and Bria Day. Sykes was named to the NCAA All-Final Four Team last season and is averaging 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Day is averaging a double-double with 17.5 ppg and 10.0 rpg.
Series History
This is the second ever meeting between the schools, the first coming last season. Stony Brook held a 25-23 lead at halftime over then-No. 25 Syracuse before the Orange pulled away in the second half for a 64-49 victory.
Making History
Syracuse is the highest-ranked opponent to venture to Stony Brook in program history and the first ranked opponent since No. 20 George Washington in 2006. Stony Brook last defeated a ranked opponent on its home court in 2005, a 58-56 win over No. 19 Temple.
Holding a Lead
Stony Brook has opened the season against two tough opponents in Iona and Hofstra but has taken the lead into halftime of each game. Stony Brook is outscoring opponents by eight points in the first half but has been outscored by 22 in the second.
Williams Fitting In
Junior guard Lauren Williams (North Babylon, N.Y.), a transfer from Florida Atlantic, is fitting into the Stony Brook
team after sitting out all of 2015-16 due to the NCAA transfer rule. She had her best game to date on Monday, scoring 14 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. She was aggressive attacking the basket, earning 12 free throw attempts and knocking down 10.
Manner gets “Bizzy”
Senior Elizabeth Manner (Vienna, Va.) followed up her career-high of 13 points, which she set in the Seawolves’ season opener at Iona, with a new career-high of 16 points on Monday night. The senior knocked down both of her three-point attempts and is averaging 14.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg through two contests.
