Seawolves Football Hits The Road To Compete In Empire Clash At Albany

Albany – Stony Brook football will complete the 2016 season on Satruday when they travel to UAlbany for the the fourth annual “Empire Clash” at 1 p.m. at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.

The winner of the game will take home The Golden Apple trophy, introduced to the rivarly in 2015. The Seawolves (5-5, 4-3 CAA Football) earned the right to house the trophy last season with a 20-2 victory over the Great Danes (6-4, 3-4 CAA Football).

Opponent
UAlbany is 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the CAA Football stadings. The Great Danes sit in seventh place in the league, one spot behind the Seawolves. UAlbany is looking to become eligible for the post season with a win on Saturday after winning two of the last three games.

The Series
This will be the 18th meeting between the two SUNY rivals and the fourth annual “Empire Clash” that will be played again this season for The Golden Apple. UAlbany leads the series 10-7, but Stony Brook owns a 2-1 lead in CAA contests. The Great Danes own a 6-2 series lead in games played in Albany.

Last Time Out
Despite two touchdowns and 94 rushing yards by RB Donald Liotine, the Stony Brook football team was unable to overcome a strong first half by Maine in a 27-21 loss on Saturday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in a CAA Football game. The Seawolves trailed 20-0 at halftime and 27-0 midway through the third quarter, but chipped away with the two Liotine touchdowns and a pick-six by DB Travon Reid-Segure, but the Black Bears were able to hold on for the sixth win in their last seven games.

Captains
Stony Brook’s captains for the 2016 season are graduate WR Tim Keith, senior DB Jaheem Woods, senior DL Aaron Thompson, junior DB Tyrice Beverette and junior RB Stacey Bedell.

Pick Six
DB Travon Reid-Segure intercepted a pass in the third quarter against Maine and returned in 12 yards for a touchdown. It was the junior’s first career touchdown and the first pick-six for the Seawolves since Naim Cheeseboro accomplished the feat at Colgate in 2013.

Climbing the Charts
RB Stacey Bedell enters the UAlbany game ranked among the top 10 in several of Stony Brook’s career rushing records. The junior sits second in career 100 yard games (12), third in career touchdowns (23), fifth in career carries (403) and seventh in career rushing yards (2119).

A Family Affair
Stony Brook RBs Stacey Bedell and Jordan Gowins share more than just the carries out of the backfield, the two are first cousins. Bedell, a junior from Mastic Beach, N.Y., and Gowins, a sophomore transfer from Bellport, N.Y., have family blood running through their veins. So far in 2016, the duo has combined to carry the ball 271 times for 1,250 yards and 12 touchdowns.
