Port Jefferson Station Man Seriously Injured In Two-Car Crash; Driver Of Other Vehicle Charged With DWAI By Drugs
Suffolk County Police have arrested a Deer Park man for driving while ability impaired by drugs after he was involved in a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a driver in Mount Sinai on Wednesday night.
John Barbera was operating a 2005 Hyundai eastbound on Route 25A when he attempted to turn left onto Echo Avenue and was struck by a westbound 2006 Chrysler operated by Erik Westerlund at approximately 11:15 p.m.
Barbera, 18, of Port Jefferson Station, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Barbera’s passenger, Kuishon Glover, 18, of Sound Beach, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Westerlund, 33, of Deer Park, was arrested and charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree. He was treated for minor injuries.
Both vehicles have been impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crash to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
