Two Coram Teens Killed In Motor Vehicle Accident On Friday
Middle Island – Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed two people and injured a third person in Middle Island on Friday night.
David Ruiz was driving a 2012 Thomas Built Bus for Rides Unlimited of Nassau and Suffolk eastbound on Whisky Road at the intersection of County Road 21 when the vehicle was struck by a 2015 Hyundai Accent. The Accent passed a steady red light for northbound County Road 21 before striking the bus on December 16 at 3:50 p.m.
The driver of the Accent, Giovanni Rivette, 16, of Coram, and one of his passengers, Reynaldo Pena, 19, of Coram, were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where they were pronounced dead. A second passenger in the Accent, Tyrique Copeland, 17, of Coram, was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.
Ruiz, 49, of Brentwood, was not injured. The bus was occupied by 18 adults and several were transported to local hospitals for precautionary reasons.
The vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
