Seawolves To Face Syracuse In Next Round Of NCAA WLAX Tournament On Sunday

Scouting the Orange
Syracuse is 17-5 in 2016 and went 5-2 in ACC play, bowing out in the conference title game with a 15-14 loss to No. 3/3 North Carolina May 1. The Orange will take the field for the first time in 12 days, as Syracuse was last in action when it played just over six minutes to complete a suspended game against Canisius May 3.
Kayla Treanor leads the Orange with 46 goals, 84 points and a nation-leading 189 draw controls. Treanor is one of three Syracuse players with 40+ goals, as she is joined by Nicole Levy (43) and Riley Donahue (42). The Orange has outscored opponents 286-202 this year.
All-Time vs. Syracuse
The Seawolves and Orange have met just once before, two years ago this week. Syracuse won the game 13-6 in the second round of the NCAA tournament to end the season of the 2014 Seawolves.
What’s At Stake
A victory Sunday would advance the Seawolves to an NCAA quarterfinal for the first time in program history. A win would also tie the program single-season wins record. The Orange – No. 4 in the latest IWLCA poll 0 would be the highest-ranked opponent the Seawolves have defeated in program history.

The Seawolves opened the NCAA tournament with an 11-9 win at Boston College Friday. It marked the 15th-consecutive victory for Stony Brook and the fourth year in a row the Seawolves have advanced to the Round of 16.
Murphy Makes History
Courtney Murphy broke the 32-year-old Division I single-season scoring record Friday by tallying her 99th of the season in the 11-9 win at Boston College.

Courtney Murphy and Kylie Ohlmiller were both named Tewaaraton nominees in 2016. The finalist list will be announced Saturday.
Seawolves Ace First ACC Test Of Weekend
A win Sunday would be the third in program history against an ACC member. Stony Brook defeated Notre Dame 9-5 at LaValle Stadium March 10, 2015 before the 11-9 win at Boston College Friday.
Friday’s win over Boston College marked the 46th different Division I team the Seawolves have defeated in their 14-year history.
Power Play
A win Sunday would be the ninth for the Seawolves over a team from a “Power 5” conference since the start of last year. The Seawolves have defeated Boston College, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Northwestern, Stanford, USC, Oregon and Florida.
Seawolves vs. The Tournament Field
Stony Brook faced five teams during the regular season that qualified for the NCAA tournament. The Seawolves defeated Stanford 17-7 March 26 and Johns Hopkins 10-7 April 17. Stony Brook fell to Florida, Northwestern and USC by a combined six goals.
New York, New York
Five teams from New York qualified for the 26-team NCAA tournament field, which is the most of any state. The Seawolves were joined by conference winners Canisius (MAAC), Cornell (Ivy) and Wagner (NEC) along with at-large selection Syracuse. The Seawolves, Big Red and Orange are still standing as Sunday’s play begins.
Survive And Advance
The Seawolves have advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament in each of the last four seasons. Stony Brook earned a bye to the second round in 2015 after wins over Towson in both 2013 and 2014.
Next Up: USC or Stanford
With a victory Sunday, Stony Brook would take on the winner of the Sunday game in Los Angeles between No. 9/8 Stanford and No. 5/4 USC in a quarterfinal to be played next weekend at a site to be determined.
