Mastic Beach Man Charged After Late-Afternoon Crash On Sunrise Highway

Yaphank – Suffolk County Police today arrested a Mastic Beach man for reckless driving after he and his passenger were injured in a single-car crash in Yaphank on Sunday evening.

John DiOrio was operating a 1993 Infinity Q45 westbound on Sunrise Highway, just east of Yaphank Avenue, when his vehicle veered off the road into the woods at 5:50 p.m.

DiOrio, 55, of Mastic Beach, was transported by South Country Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Medical Center in East Patchogue for serious injuries. His passenger, Doreen Miller, 60, of Babylon, was transported by South Country Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries

DiOrio was charged with Reckless Driving and issued three additional summonses. He was issued a field appearance ticket and is scheduled for arraignment at a later date.  The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.

Westbound Sunrise Highway was closed for approximately two hours while police conducted an investigation.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
