Town Officials Oversee Demolition Of “Zombie” House In Blue Point

Blue Point – On July 26, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Neil Foley were on-hand for the demolition of a “zombie house” located at 50 Montauk Highway in Blue Point.
The house had been vacant for many years and was the source of resident complaints about drug activity and squatters, leading to Town of Brookhaven housing code violations dating back to 2014.
The house was demolished by the Town’s Department of Waste Management in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code, which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The property will be cleared of debris and graded by the Town. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner.
Supervisor Romaine said, “Nearly every community in Brookhaven Town has seen an increase in “zombie” houses and many are not secure like this one. We have been very aggressive in our efforts to issue violations and will continue to demolish these dangerous eyesores throughout the Town.”
Councilwoman Foley said, “This house attracted squatters who created a dangerous situation for the nearby residents and businesses along Montauk Highway. I thank the Town’s Law and Waste Management Departments for making the removal of “zombie” houses a priority in Brookhaven.”
