National Weather Service Issues An Excessive Heat Warning Through The Weekend As Heat Wave Grips Brookhaven
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Upton has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Brookhaven Town and the Metropolitan area of New York, through Sunday.
According to the NWS, heat index values on Friday and Saturday will vary between 105° to 110°. On Sunday, the heat index is expected to be between 100° and 105°. The heat indexes will be highest in the mid-to-late afternoon hours.
Overnight temperatures are expected to remain above 80°.
The combination of the heat and humidity will increase the risk for heat-related health issues, especially for the elderly and those with chronic health problems such as lung and heart disease. Additionally, those working outdoors or those who may be heat-sensitive are at risk.
The NWS cautions that residents should use air conditioning to stay cool at home, or go to a location that is air conditioned, to seek relief from the heat. It would also be wise to check on any vulnerable friends or family members.
Excessive Heat Warnings are issued when the combination of heat and humidity are expected to make it feel as though outside temperatures are 105° or higher.
Although the excessive heat is expected to break late Sunday, high temperatures next week will remain in the mid-80° range.
