Councilwoman Bonner Speaks At Organ Donor Enrollment Day Kick-Off Event At Stony Brook University Hospital

Stony Brook – On October 6, Councilwoman Jane Bonner, joined Stony Brook University Hospital doctors, administrators, elected officials and other donors at the hospital’s Organ Donor Enrollment Day event. The goal of the event was to enroll as many people as possible as organ donors. Every 18 hours a New Yorker dies waiting for an organ transplant. Although 83% of New Yorkers support organ donation, only 27% are actually enrolled on the New York State Registry; this is well below the national average of 50%.

Councilwoman Bonner said, “As a recent kidney donor myself, it’s disheartening to know that New York is 50th out of 50 states in the percentage of residents enrolled as organ donors. That needs to change so more lives can be saved. Over 10,000 New Yorkers are awaiting an organ transplant and I urge everyone to enroll now.”
