Stony Brook Seawolves Women’s Soccer Cruises To 2-0 Victory Over The Black Bears Of Maine
Stony Brook – The Stony Brook women’s soccer team made it five straight wins in LaValle Stadium Thursday night with a 2-0 win over the Maine Black Bears. The Seawolves are now 7-7-2 on the year and 4-1-0 in America East, while Maine dropped to 6-7-0 on the season and 2-4-0 in league play
Faherty’s Reaction
“I’m really happy with our performance tonight, I thought we worked really hard on both sides of the ball,” said head coach Brendan Faherty. “I thought defensively, our front three did a really good job setting the tone for us, and our back four were able to win a lot of balls in the air for us and clear balls. I thought we scored two great goals, both off of restarts. Overall it was a great performance and I’m very happy with what we were able to accomplish tonight.”
Highlights
– Sophomore Allyson Baner (Farmingdale, N.Y.) got the Seawolves on the board in the 9th minute when she headed in a corner from senior defender Hannah Groth (Cedarburg, Wisc.)
– The aggressive attack on offense for Stony Brook in the second half finally resulted in another goal when senior Amy Thompson (Luxembourg City, Luxembourg) knocked in a relayed free kick as Groth sent it in to senior Priscilla Wiggins (Fresno, Calif.) who headed it back to Thompson for the goal.
– Sophomore keeper Cara Gallagher (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned her fourth straight shutout at home and sixth of the year.
Notes
– The win is fifth straight at home for the Seawolves.
– Stony Brook’s four-straight wins in America East action marks its longest winning streak in conference play since winning four straight in 2009.
– With the two goals scored against Maine, the Seawolves have now tallied 12 goals in their last five home games, allowing just one in that stretch.
– With the win over the Black Bears, Stony Brook currently sits in second in America East with a 4-1-0 record and 12 points.
