Stony Brook Women’s Basketball Grinds Out 55-50 Win At Manhattan

New York – Senior Elizabeth Manner (Vienna, Va.) recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and junior Aaliyah Worley(Philadelphia, Pa.) added a season-high 13 points as the Stony Brook women’s basketball team (2-3) earned its second straight win with a 55-50 victory at Manhattan.

It wasn’t the prettiest game but it was a gutsy road win,” said head coach Caroline McCombs. “We have played in a lot of tight games and we are getting better at managing end of game situations. It showed today as we made the plays we needed to make in the final minute.”
Turning Point
The Seawolves held a 48-41 with four minutes to play in the fourth quarter before the Jaspers rattled off an 8-0 run to take a 49-48 lead with 1:16 to go. Worley responded with an aggressive drive to the hole to earn two free throws. She made both to put Stony Brook in front for good. Senior Kori Bayne-Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) made all four of her free throw attempts down the stretch to close out the win.
Inside the Numbers
- Stony Brook held Manhattan to 15-of-50 shooting (30.0%) from the field, while the Seawolves went 16-of-51 (31.4%).
- The Jaspers hit 6-of-19 three-point shots (31.6%), while Stony Brook went 4-of-17 (23.5%).
- Stony Brook was solid from the free throw line, hitting 19-of-24 attempts (79.2%). Manhattan hit 14-of-20 from the line (70.0%).
- Stony Brook had its best rebounding performance of the season, hauling in 46 rebounds to just 31 for Manhattan. The Seawolves outscored the Jaspers 24-18 in the paint.
Notes
- Manner’s 11 rebounds were a career-high. Worley chipped in with seven boards, while senior Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.) and sophomore Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) added six.
- Wingate joined Worley and Manner in double figures with 10 points, all of which came in the first half while Bayne-Walker sat with foul trouble.
- Bayne-Walker tied her season-high with five assists to go along with eight points.
- The third quarter, which plagued the Seawolves through their first four games, was kind to Stony Brook on Saturday. Stony Brook held the Jaspers to just six third quarter points, winning the stanza by 10 points to turn a two-point halftime deficit into an eight point lead.
