Stony Brook Men’s Hoops Team Defeats Lehigh

Stony Brook – The Stony Brook men’s basketball team made it back-to-back wins at Island Federal Credit Union Arena as it knocked off Lehigh, 62-57, Tuesday night. It was a close one throughout, but strong defensive play and clutch free throw shooting from senior Lucas Woodhouse (Greenlawn, N.Y.) helped secure the victory. Both teams now sit at 3-5 on the year.
Boals’ Reaction
“I’m really proud of our guys, I thought they battled,” said head coach Jeff Boals. “We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, which we had the last five halves we played, but we defended and rebounded when we needed to. We had certain guys step up and make big-time plays down the stretch. We’ve had seven games in 16 days, I thought we were fatigued, Lucas has played over 32 minutes in the last three games, and I know he was tired. But for him to step up and go 12-for-12 from the line tells you a little bit about who he is.”
Highlights
- It was a slow start to the night for both teams as only two field goals were made in the first four minutes of play, but back-to-back threes from junior Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.) got Stony Brook in it and began a seven-minute span of lead changes.
- Redshirt freshman Alonzo Campbell (Columbus, Ohio) came up with a big block after checking in and laid one in on the other end of the floor for the first points of his career, which gave the Seawolves a lead they would keep going into the halftime break.
- The Mountain Hawks were without their leading scorer for much of the first half due to foul trouble, but Tim Kempton was still able to put up 11 points in the first half, seven of which came from the free throw line.
- Stony Brook strung together seven quick points in the beginning of the second half, five of which came from redshirt freshman Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England), but Kempton halted the run with Lehigh’s second three of the half early on.
- The Seawolves never lost their lead again after the opening minutes of the new half, and used a 10-2 run around the midway point in the period to earn their largest lead of the night.
- Lehigh never went away and was able to get back within one with 37 seconds remaining in the game after making back-to-back threes, but four straight makes by Woodhouse from the free throw line decided the game.
Notes
- Yeboah’s 16 points marks a new season best for the newcomer.
- Woodhouse was again dependable late from the free throw line, sinking a career-high 12 in the game, 10 of which came in the final 5:03.
- The Seawolves limited themselves to just eight turnovers, keeping the total in single digits for the third time this season.
- Stony Brook scored 23 of its points off of Lehigh’s 19 turnovers.
- The Seawolves’ bench kept them in it in the first half, scoring 14 of the team’s 26 points in the opening period.
- Stony Brook has now won three of its last four games.
